What it sounds like
A padded tap per notch, low and dull, like a fingertip drumming a mousepad. Nothing about it is sharp, so a long scroll becomes a soft patter rather than a rattle. You can leave it on all day.

How it is made
A burst of white noise low-passed at 800 Hz and a short 320 Hz sine for the pad. No high frequencies get through.
